How to hit better golf shots under pressure?

We all have felt it. Those tense shots on the first tee, or the must make putt on the 18th. No matter what level golf you play you will benefit from knowing how to hit better golf shots under pressure. Who better to teach us how to hit better golf shots under pressure then Ben Hogan.

Two easy steps:

Step 1:

One of Ben Hogan’s many secrets was to slow it down. He meant slow everything down, I mean everything. On a tournament day, he would actually drive half the posted speed limit. That’s right, half! This mindset and approach to pressure situations allowed him to stay composed and hit good golf shots. Next time you have the time, drive a little slower, walk a little slower and most importantly breathe slower..But still remember to breathe.

I recently had a golf event that put me in a high pressure situation all day. I was asked to hit golf balls in front of everyone at the golf course. Needless to say it was a perfect way to test Ben Hogan's mindset during a pressure situation. I found that I really had to think about slowing it down and be conscious of how fast I was breathing and moving. I found myself at one point feeling the pressure and breathing fast and moving too fast. I literally just sat down for a moment to slow down my body and it helped. I won't say I hit perfect shots all day but it did help me maintain composure and perform better under those pressure situations.

Step 2:

Practice under pressure! Many golfers do not put themselves in enough pressure situations before entering a tournament, club championship or that ever important round of golf with your boss. The only way to feel less pressure and perform better during high pressure situation is to practice in those circumstances.

How do I practice under pressure? Take a golf partner to the driving range and ask him to watch you hit specific shots. Don’t just have your partner watch you hit balls into the trees. Pick out a yard marker or flag stick and call each shot. That type of confidence and pressure to execute the shot will help you become more accustomed to high pressure situations and shots.

So practice and slow down to hit better golf shots under pressure!

One question I was being asked often about our golf club driver heads, Is there a difference between the green cavities and the back cavities?

The answer is NO. The original Grenade golf driver heads were painted with black cavities as I was going for a sleek and stealthy look. As time went on, Facebook fans began asking for green cavities. I decided to put it a vote and many golfers decided that green was the way to go. Since that point the green golf driver heads are now outselling the black golf driver heads by 8 to 1. It makes me ask the question, should the black be phased out!

Putter design process has begun!!

Thursday August, 27th marked the beginning of the design and engineering process for the Grenade putter! Similar to the Grenade golf driver, the putter will be co-engineered with the University of Vermont's Engineering department.

We talked about our problem statement and the challenges all golfer's face when trying to sink more putts. Lack of accuracy, incorrect speed, wrong alignment, mis-hit putts, and the list went on and on.

First, the 4 UVM Engineering students and myself will begin our patent research. This is a long and arduous process but a necessary step.

As we talked through current designs, it was clear that there is a lot of putter designs out there that are similar in design and shape. The question becomes why? We will try and answer that question as we design and Engineer a new golf putter that is worthy of bringing to the market. If the product does not perform or doesn't meet my high expectations, than it will not be released.

What length golf driver should I use?

The topic of golf driver length is rarely discussed, as many golf companies can't adjust the length of their golf drivers once the club is built. Every year golf drivers are becoming longer and longer. It was only a few years ago that golf drivers were 43.5 to 44 inches in length. Now most off the shelf golf drivers are 46 to 46.5 inches in length. The introduction of light weight equipment has allowed this trend to continue, but is it the right move??

My answer is NO. Yes, golf companies can build golf drivers to longer lengths and maintain normal swing weights but how does it perform for most golfers. The majority of golfers and even low handicappers struggle with longer clubs. The longer you go the more difficult it is to hit it consistently and hit it square.

If that is the case, why are golf companies going longer. The longer you go the more "potential" you have for distance. Keyword there is potential, as a longer shafted golf driver will allow you to hit it farther, but only if you can hit it square. For most golfers, just hitting it square consistently is a challenge enough.

So in a basic theory, the longer your golf driver is the more POTENTIAL you have for increased distance. Likewise, the shorter you go the more accuracy and control you are likely to gain. This basic concept is why many pro golfers play golf drivers that are 44 to 44.5 inches in length. (Tiger plays a 43.5 inch driver). Because for these professionals, the potential for distance is not important if they lose any accuracy or control.

On the flip side, this concept is why many long drive golfers use golf drivers that are 48 inches in length!! I have hit many 48 inch golf drivers in my day and I would never bring it on the golf course. Well unless I had 20 golf balls in my bag...

What is the proper tee height for a golf driver?

A few factors come into play when finding a proper tee height for your golf game. First factor is the size and height of your golf driver. With today's large 460cc club heads a longer tee is almost always required.

As a general rule of thumb for standard shots, half of the ball should be above the face of the club head. This will insure upward angle of attack and good control. To increase distance and control, it is recommended to tee the ball down slightly. Hitting a golf drive with the lower half of the face typically insures more control and accuracy.

Conversely, teeing the golf ball high. Some golfers as high as 4 inches!! Will allow you to generate a high launch angle and insure and upward strike is achieved. This is many reasons why long drive professionals use 4 inch golf tees that are barely teed into the grown. I like to equate it to teeing up on from the first floor versus teeing up from the second floor. Having an initial higher starting point is a great way to achieve maximum distance, but can cause more accuracy issues.

Use this guidelines and practice at the driving range to find a proper tee height that fits your golf game and your goals.

Side note: USGA legal maximum allowable tee height is 4 inches.
