The American Nightmare - A Golf Story

The American Nightmare - A Golf Story

For those that have spoken to me directly, you may often hear me say "living the dream." Which is the truth, but before the dream was the nightmare. I think many of you will relate to this story....maybe.

First, let me say thanks to all of my customers that have allowed BombTech golf to be so successful. Without you and a lot of hard work, this would not been possible. So thanks.

When I started BombTech Golf I was working as a pharmaceutical Sales Rep. It was a job, not a career. The threat of layoffs was always looming and eventually would impact my position. After 2 years of working there with great success, we ALL (528 Sales Reps) got the phone call. The type of call you get on Friday at 4 P.M. that everyone in the country had to be on.

As expected, half of the sales force. Yes, 250 employees were to be laid off. I was proactive and had a more "secure" job lined up for when this day had come. Technically I took a voluntary resignation which allowed me to start my new job instead of just waiting around until Christmas to hear about getting laid off.

Anyways, I started a new job as a Sales Director for an Engineering firm in Vermont. Good pay and never had a lay off. During this time, BombTech golf began to grow and gain serious momentum. Then four months into the new job, we were all called into the conference room. "Sorry to tell you this, but we are letting 10 people go." Oh, great! I exclaimed to myself. This news was less than comforting considering that I just went through this process. A few weeks later, another meeting. "Sorry to tell you this, but we are letting 20 people go." At this point, I am saying to myself, Oh SHIT! This is the AMERICAN NIGHTMARE!

Although the company was experiencing lay offs, I honestly wasn't too concerned since I had grown our Sales Division from $1.5 million in sales to $2.2 million in sales in less than a year. And when you perform, you don't get laid off, or so I thought!

Ok..Layoffs, organization change and now a new boss. But I was selling, so they couldn't lay me off right.....Wrong and worse.

Typical Monday...Coffee, cold calls and emails. Standard protocol. I will never forget this moment. My new boss that I had been working with for 4 months, walked into my office. Let me first mention that he just got back from training a client on a $125,000 deal I SOLD! Not him or anyone else.

He asks me to follow him. So I am walking with him down the hall, we pass his office on the left then continue through another hall. I knew when we walked by his office, that we could not be headed anywhere good. We take one more hallway right into the HR manger's office.

Long story short. He says, "Just not working out and your last pay check was last week!" I almost hit the guy, but I told him and the HR manager that I needed to get some water....I composed myself. I responded, "What is my job? Is it to sell? Are sales not up by $700,000 over last year?" He responded, "Well yea, and yea. But we just don't think your a good fit for long term." So even though I am doing my job, and doing it extremely well. I am being punished and FIRED. After 30 minutes of discussion, I was able to negotiate a small small severance. Great...now what.

I had an hour long drive home. In which, I tried to figure out what to tell the wife and what I was going to do. This American Nightmare was the motivation to live the American Dream (aka BombTech Golf)! I say the word dream lightly, as it is non-stop fight and grind. But it is a fight worth fighting and winning!

I truly appreciate your support and business!

Custom Golf Drivers vs. Golf Drivers

Posted by Tyler Sullivan on

Custom golf drivers vs. stock golf drivers.

After the hundreds of questions I have received. I felt obliged to write a quick blog about the differences between custom golf drivers vs. stock golf drivers.

Stock Golf Drivers:

Stock golf drivers are better defined as "off the rack" golf drivers. When you go into any of the large retail stores like Dick Sporting Goods, GolfTown, Edwin Watts, etc. You can simply go and grab a "stock" driver off the rack. There are no custom options to choose with regards to shaft length and shaft type. These off the rack options are mass produced to fit a specific cost in mind.

Custom Golf Drivers:

Custom golf drivers are built to each golfers unique specifications. Shaft length is one major factor that can't be changed with a stock shaft. But custom golf drivers can easily be built to specific golf driver lengths. Golf driver lengths have a huge impact on performance and should be considered when choosing a new golf driver. Custom golf driver manufacturers make individual components and focus on quality to outperform the competition. The majority of the pros on the PGA tour use custom golf drivers built with specific specs. Each custom tour model is built to the golfers specs. This insures maximum performance and hopefully lower scores!

Custom golf drivers can come at a cost. Many after market shafts cost upwards of $300, this means a custom golf driver could be well over $500.00 when built. This performance is measurable but proper basic fitting is required to maximize your game.

Do adjustable golf drivers work?

Posted by Tyler Sullivan on

Do adjustable golf drivers work?

Why is there so much value put into movable weights and the ability to adjust the Driver today and why do “we” the golfing community buy into it so much? When the truth of the matter is once we go to the range and mess around with it “thinking” we now have the perfect set up. We then set off to play, and guess what there is no going back or changing during the course of play, so what we have really bought is an expensive “range” toy.

What happened to just naturally working the ball with the feel of our hands and swing, backed up by solid technology with shaft and club head? What many of us forget is if we have issues and we try and fix them with weights and adjustability, we are honestly hurting our game by masking our faults with false positive results, or in some case further amplifying an issue. Trust me I’ve tried these and it really sucks to be playing golf only to be fighting against the adjustments you make to your club.

To me these drivers are a novelty item not a golf improvement option, if you want to improve your driving ability take a lesson hit some balls, “learn” to feel your swing and buy a club that is made solidly and has a shaft that fits your mold.  Then go out and learn how to work the ball a bit and trust me this is true for every club not just the big dog!!

Ask yourself, do adjustable golf drivers work? Or should you drop the wrench and hit the range!

What type of epoxy to use for golf clubs?

Posted by Tyler Sullivan on

What type of epoxy to use for golf clubs?

First, let me say that the majority of epoxies will do the intended job well. But with this said, there is varying levels of quality, sheer strength and cure times. As a basic rule of thumb, the longer the dry or cure the time the higher the strength or hold. The longer dry time epoxies, also known as 24 hour epoxies typically offer longer times for mixing. These epoxies are great for when you are building multiple golf drivers in one sitting.

Likewise, the 5 minute, 10 minute and other quick cure epoxies tend to have lower overall sheer strength and mixing times. These quick epoxies have very short mix times and are not recommend when building more than 1 or 2 golf clubs or golf drivers at one time. The shorter dry time epoxies are appealing to golfers that want to build and hit their new clubs the same day, but I always recommend the longer cure epoxy for longevity of the club.

Now that you have chosen a cure time, how do you know what brand or type you should use? I have talked to a number of club fitters and few use non-golf epoxies. Non-golf epoxies such as the epoxies you can buy at your local hardware store. Although these will most likely hold for most applications, they are not recommended and engineered specific to unique forces that a golf swing cause. Unless you have to, do not use non-golf specific epoxies. Use epoxy designed for golf as they usually have higher peel sheer strengths and elastic properties that hold well during impacts specific to a golf club hitting a golf ball.

Ok so we answered, "what type of epoxy to use for golf clubs?" but is there anything you can add to those epoxies to make them stronger?

Yes... the secret to making any epoxy stronger and increase the strength and adhesion is to add glass shafting beads. A small pinch of these beads will help increase not only strength but will help center your golf shaft in the hosel. It is recommended to use the shafting beads in all golf driver or golf club builds!

Regardless of what type of epoxy you use to build your golf clubs, it is all about the having fun during the process.
