Would you ever play an illegal golf driver?
First, what is an illegal golf driver? Any golf driver that doesn't conform to USGA and R&A rules is considered illegal. The most common type of illegal golf drivers offer a high COR. A COR value above 0.83 (legal max) will offer more distance for most golfers that use it. Other types of illegal golf drivers include, oversized golf drivers (460cc or larger), anti-slice and extra long (over 48 inches in length) golf drivers. These types of illegal golf drivers are not as common as a high COR driver.
There are a few companies that manufacture golf drivers to be illegal and there is even a service that can make any golf driver illegal. The company will shave off a portion of the existing golf driver face to increase the COR. Face shaving can lead to breakage and strange ball flights, so for many it is considered a risky proposition. Who wants to ruin a nice golf driver!
But let's get back to the question, would you play an illegal golf driver or even have yours made into one.
I personally would never think of putting an illegal golf driver in play. It's cheating....It's that simple. Whether I am playing against someone or even just by myself.
I posed this question to a few of our over 100,000+ Facebook fans and this is what they had to say.
Facebook question: "What do you think about illegal golf drivers? More specifically services that offer driver face shaving to increase the COR?"
Robert LaJoie: I don't think I would trust it and for what really, another yard or two?
Eddie Galvan: It doesn't bother me. I don't play for handicap or official tournaments so rock whatcha got.
David Cruz: File it under the same category as the guy with nitrous in his car going around racing other cars without it.
Kate Hughes: Don't like and don't agree! Simply put...play within the rules.
Steve Murphy: A scam. I wouldn't trust the club maker who does this.
Jason And Lori Worley: For fun at like Top Golf.
Mitchell Thurman: I wouldn't ever play with one.
Matthew Glomb: Who wants to keep buying new heads and for what a $5 bet not worth it.
Aaron Ellis: I know that it increases the chances for the club to become damaged.
Tim Kretschmer: wish there would be more high COR driver, for all the seniors who aren't compete professional. give them a chance to enjoy the game more...!
Mike Hallee: Unless it can't make me make more putts or hit iron shots closer it wouldn't help me! If your a scratch golfer right on the edge of greatness maybe yes.. 10 handicap not so much.
New technology has allowed us to create a golf driver that is nearly as long as something illegal but still be legal, so who needs to play something that breaks the rules!
It is clear, that the vast majority would not play anything illegal. What would you do?

Look…first of all it’s only “illegal” in a USGA sanctioned event or if your turning in your scores to obtain a handicap. Yes an extra 20 plus yards will improve your scoring ability thus lowering your scores. When your fighting the effects of aging it’s a plus! Naysayers get over yourselves.
